ROSELAND, NJ — ADP reported private-sector employment increased by 109,000 jobs in April, while annual pay growth for workers who remained in their jobs slowed slightly to 4.4%.

The April hiring total marked the fastest pace of private-sector job growth since January 2025, according to the ADP National Employment Report produced with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab.

Service-providing industries accounted for 94,000 of the jobs added in April, led by education and health services with 61,000 positions and trade, transportation, and utilities with 25,000 positions.

Goods-producing industries added 15,000 jobs, including gains of 10,000 in construction and 3,000 in natural resources and mining.

Professional and business services lost 8,000 jobs during the month, while other services declined by 1,000.

“Small and large employers are hiring, but we’re seeing softness in the middle,” said Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP. “Large companies have resources to deploy, and small ones are the most nimble, both important advantages in a complex labor environment.”

Small businesses with fewer than 50 employees added 65,000 jobs in April, while large employers with more than 500 employees added 42,000 jobs. Medium-sized businesses added 2,000 jobs overall.

Regionally, the West led hiring growth with 46,000 jobs added, followed by the South with 34,000. The Northeast added 18,000 jobs and the Midwest added 11,000.

ADP said annual pay growth for workers changing jobs held steady at 6.6% in April.

Among job-stayers, manufacturing workers posted annual pay growth of 4.8%, while financial activities employees saw pay gains of 5.1%.

The March employment gain was revised lower to 61,000 jobs from the previously reported 62,000.
