WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County health inspectors cited multiple food-service establishments on June 4 for violations ranging from improper food temperatures and sanitation lapses to conditions that could support rodent activity, according to inspection reports released by the Chester County Health Department.
The most significant violations involved food temperature control failures, pest-related concerns, and sanitation deficiencies that can increase food safety risks if left uncorrected.
At Saladworks in Jenners Village Center, West Grove, inspectors documented a repeat violation involving precooked chicken, turkey, and diced tomatoes that were not being cooled to 41 degrees Fahrenheit or below before being placed in a refrigerated display case. Inspectors said the display case is intended for cold holding only and not for cooling food.
The restaurant was also cited for unlabeled food containers, expired sanitizer test strips, food stored directly on a freezer floor, leaking hand sinks, and the storage of personal medication above a food-preparation area.
At Speedyz 1196 Inc. in Coatesville, inspectors found a prep-top refrigerator operating at 54 degrees, with potentially hazardous food also measuring 54 degrees. The food was discarded during the inspection, and the facility was ordered to repair the unit immediately.
Additional violations at the convenience store included opened lunch meat without date markings, refrigeration units lacking thermometers, a handwashing sink without soap and unclean flooring beneath refrigeration equipment.
The Chester County Health Department also cited Microtel Inn & Suites in West Chester for conditions around its dumpster area that inspectors said could contribute to rodent activity. The report noted suspected rodent burrows near dumpsters, accumulated debris, and the presence of an open bulk dumpster.
Inspectors directed the facility to have a certified pest-control operator perform rodent treatments and submit reports to the county for review. The hotel was also cited because management failed to notify the health department of an imminent health hazard involving a rodent infestation and closure by another local authority.
At Hilton Garden Inn in Exton, inspectors ordered corrective action after finding slime buildup on an ice machine drop plate, expired sanitizer test kits, and self-service apples that were not individually wrapped. The facility was also cited because a handwashing sink supplied water at 69 degrees, below the required minimum temperature of 85 degrees.
SushiLux JC Corp., operating inside ShopRite in West Chester, was cited after inspectors observed frozen fish thawing at room temperature, an unapproved method under food safety regulations. Inspectors also found ready-to-eat fish products stored without required date labels.
The inspection at Saladworks produced the highest number of violations among facilities listed in the June 4 report.
Twelve establishments were found to be in compliance with county food safety regulations, including
- Bellewood Golf Club in Pottstown;
- Buddy’s Burgers, Breasts & Fries in West Chester;
- Dosthi Bandi LLC Commissary in Malvern;
- Dosthi Bandi LLC Food Truck in Malvern;
- Happy Days Family Bistro in Thorndale;
- KFC-Taco Bell/West Whiteland in Exton;

- The Original Hot Bagels in Landenberg;
- Walnut Brook Foods in Lincoln University;
- Wendy’s #2230/East Pikeland in Phoenixville, and

The Chester County Health Department noted that inspection reports represent conditions observed at the time of inspection and may not reflect a facility’s long-term compliance status. Facilities cited for violations are generally required to correct deficiencies within specified timeframes and may be subject to follow-up inspections.
