PHILADELPHIA, PA — A Nigerian man was sentenced Friday to five years in federal prison for his role in a money-laundering and wire-fraud scheme tied to the sexual extortion and death of a young man in eastern Pennsylvania, closing a case that required arrests and extraditions from Nigeria.
U.S. District Judge Joel H. Slomsky also sentenced Afeez Olatunji Adewale, 27, to three years of supervised release.
Adewale pleaded guilty in April to money laundering conspiracy and wire fraud after being extradited to the United States in February, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania reported.
Nigerian authorities arrested Adewale on Aug. 17, 2023, during a broader FBI operation targeting sexual extortion schemes aimed at victims in the United States. He was extradited on Feb. 13 with assistance from U.S. and Nigerian law enforcement agencies.
U.S. Attorney David Metcalf described Adewale as the final defendant to be sentenced in the case.
“I hope that their arrests, extradition, and prosecution make clear that the DOJ will go after those terrorizing our young people — no matter where the scammers and sextortionists may be,” Metcalf stated.
Adewale’s co-defendants, Imoleayo Samuel Aina, also known as “Alice Dave,” and Samuel Olasunkanmi Abiodun, were extradited to the United States in August 2024.
Abiodun pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy and wire fraud and was sentenced in June 2025 to five years in prison.
Aina pleaded guilty to cyberstalking, interstate threat to injure reputation, receiving proceeds of extortion, money laundering conspiracy and wire fraud. He was sentenced in October 2025 to six years in prison.
FBI Philadelphia Special Agent in Charge Wayne A. Jacobs said the investigation showed that offenders operating outside the United States could still be identified, extradited and prosecuted through international cooperation.
Abington Township Police Chief Patrick Molloy credited federal authorities with extending the investigation beyond the limits of local law enforcement jurisdiction.
The FBI’s Fort Washington Resident Agency and the Abington Township Police Department investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Brown prosecuted it.
