Rajant Tests Multi-Band Tactical Network at Army Exercise

MALVERN, PA — Rajant Corporation tested technology that automatically shifts military communications traffic across multiple radio frequencies, waveforms, and 5G infrastructure during a 10-day U.S. Army exercise at Fort Irwin, California, as the service evaluates its next-generation command-and-control architecture at division scale.

Project Convergence Capstone 6 brought together about 10,000 participants from the U.S. Joint force, multinational allies and partners, and industry to test emerging technologies under complex operational scenarios.

Working with the DEVCOM C5ISR Center, Rajant supported the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment with its Mesh-Over-Everything networking approach.

The deployment used Rajant’s wireless FE1 Peregrine BreadCrumb radio across L-, S- and C-bands, along with a third-party V-band system and 5G infrastructure.

Rajant’s InstaMesh protocol switched communications between bands and waveforms on a packet-by-packet basis without requiring user intervention, according to the company.

Transmit power was also adjusted dynamically to improve low probability of intercept and low probability of detection characteristics, while the system incorporated additional capabilities for operating in electronic-warfare environments.

The company also tested its SLP-1025 SlipStream software-defined networking technology, which extended the mesh network across third-party 5G modems and connected that infrastructure with the tactical network.

The demonstration addressed a central operational challenge for military communications: maintaining connectivity across different transmission paths without requiring users to manually manage the underlying network.

“The value of Mesh-Over-Everything is not any single radio or band,” said David Acker, Rajant’s vice president of technology. “It is the ability to bring those paths together and allow InstaMesh to manage them packet-by-packet without user intervention.”

Project Convergence Capstone 6 focused on continued validation of the Army’s Next Generation Command and Control architecture, using the large-scale exercise to evaluate technologies alongside existing and emerging military systems.
