ICYMI: Newlin Township Weighs Income Tax Hike for Fire, EMS Funding

Newlin Township

NEWLIN TWP, PA — In case you missed it, Newlin Township supervisors will consider raising the municipal earned-income tax rate from 0.5% to 0.6% at a public hearing Monday, Nov. 9, seeking additional revenue to support fire protection and emergency medical services for township residents.

The proposed increase would add $1 in municipal income tax for every $1,000 in taxable earned income, raising the township’s existing rate by 20%.

For a resident earning $50,000 in taxable annual income, the municipal tax would increase from $250 to $300, an additional $50 per year.

According to the township’s public notice, the earned-income tax is projected to generate approximately $570,000 in fiscal 2027 under the proposed ordinance. That figure represents estimated revenue from the tax, not necessarily the additional amount generated by the rate increase.

The proposed ordinance would amend Chapter 193, Section 193-5, of the Newlin Township Code, which governs the imposition of the earned-income tax.

Supervisors intend to dedicate the additional revenue to helping fund fire and emergency medical services, according to the notice.

The increase would be enacted under Pennsylvania’s Local Tax Enabling Act, which authorizes municipalities to levy certain local taxes.
