WAYNE, PA — Renovus Capital Partners retained the top spot in the HEC-Dow Jones Small-Cap Private Equity Performance Ranking for a fourth consecutive year, a distinction that comes as lower middle-market buyout firms compete for investor capital in a tougher fundraising environment.
The Philadelphia-area private equity firm achieved the highest performance score among 695 firms analyzed in the annual ranking, which evaluated returns generated by 1,439 funds raised between 2012 and 2021 with a combined equity volume of approximately $2.5 trillion.
The result extends Renovus’ standing during a period in which private equity firms have faced higher borrowing costs, slower exits, and increased scrutiny from institutional investors over long-term performance and liquidity.
“To be recognized as the top small-cap private equity fund for the fourth year in a row is a tremendous honor,” Founding Partner Atif Gilani said. “This achievement reflects the exceptional work of our team and the outstanding leadership of our portfolio companies.”
The HEC-Dow Jones ranking measures private equity performance over a 10-year horizon using quantitative analysis of fund results, making consistency across multiple market cycles a key differentiator for firms seeking commitments from pensions, endowments, and other limited partners.
Renovus focuses on lower middle-market investments in sectors tied to education, workforce development, healthcare services, and human capital management — areas that have continued attracting private equity investment amid demand for professional training, staffing, and specialized services.
Founding Partner Jesse Serventi linked the firm’s performance to its lower middle-market focus and team depth.
“Our success is a function of intentionally staying focused on the lower middle market and building a deep, talented team,” Serventi said.
The lower middle market has increasingly become a focal point for buyout firms seeking acquisitions with lower entry valuations and more operational upside than larger, heavily intermediated deals.
The HEC-Dow Jones ranking, now in its fifth year, tracks global private equity firms across multiple investment categories and fund sizes using long-term performance data rather than short-term fundraising activity or deal volume.
