DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Knowing what to do in the first critical moments of a cardiac or medical emergency can make a difference before professional help arrives, and East Caln Township residents will have an opportunity this fall to practice those skills alongside local emergency medical professionals.

East Caln Township and Minquas Fire Company No. 2 EMS will offer Community CPR and first-aid training Saturday, Oct. 3, at the township building on Bell Tavern Road in Downingtown. Two small-group sessions are scheduled, giving participants hands-on instruction in practical emergency-response skills.

The free program comes as local interest is already filling the available spaces. The morning session, limited to 20 participants, is full. As of Aug. 28, eight of the 20 spaces in the afternoon session remained available.

The response underscores the community interest in learning skills that can be put to use well before an ambulance reaches the scene. CPR training can prepare bystanders to respond when someone experiences cardiac arrest, while first-aid instruction can help residents handle other emergencies until trained responders take over.

For Minquas Fire Company, the classes also provide an opportunity to bring emergency preparedness beyond the ambulance and directly into the community. Rather than simply telling residents what to do during an emergency, the program gives participants a chance to learn and practice alongside EMS personnel.

Class sizes are intentionally limited, with 20 spaces available during each two-hour session. Registration is required, and anyone interested in the remaining afternoon openings should register in advance.

For residents who secure one of the remaining spaces, the afternoon offers more than a lesson in emergency procedures. It is a chance to leave better prepared to help a family member, neighbor, co-worker, or stranger during the minutes when knowing how to respond may matter most.
