WEST CHESTER, PA — Forty-eight middle school teams from across Chester County gathered at West Chester University on Friday, May 15, for the 2026 Chester County Knowledge Bowl, capping off a spirited day of academic competition, teamwork, and fast-paced trivia battles.
Hosted by the Chester County Intermediate Unit, the annual event brought together sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students to compete in a quiz-style tournament covering subjects ranging from literature and science to geography, mathematics, history, and current events.
The university campus buzzed with excitement throughout the day as teams of four to eight students tested their knowledge across four competitive rounds. During each match, teams raced to answer 60 questions, relying on preparation, quick thinking, and collaboration to gain an edge over their opponents.
“What stands out every year is the enthusiasm these students bring,” said Kathy Gurnee, special events coordinator for the CCIU. “The Knowledge Bowl challenges them to think fast, work as a team, and draw on everything they know, and watching them rise to that challenge is incredibly rewarding.”
Volunteers also praised the energy and dedication students displayed throughout the event. Karen Stokes, a retired Brandywine Virtual Academy teacher and returning volunteer, said she was impressed by both the students’ knowledge and teamwork.
“I really, really love seeing the enthusiasm for knowledge that the students display,” Stokes said. “It was impressive to see how much students know, and how important teamwork is.”
For students, the event offered both competition and camaraderie.
“What I like most is collaborating with my team to get high scores,” said Lydia Kurniawan of Valley Forge Middle School. “A lot of the knowledge you have really just comes from random facts you’ve learned over the years.”
After a full day of competition, Fugett Middle School team “Adi’s Disciples” captured first place in the seventh- and eighth-grade division with 140 points. Tredyffrin/Easttown Middle School team “Mind Over Matter” finished a close second with 137 points, while Peirce Middle School team “We Came, We Saw, We Conquered” secured third place with 136 points.
In the sixth-grade division, Peirce Middle School team “The Terminators” earned first place with 144 points. Saint Agnes School team “The Brainstorm Battalion” placed second with 127 points, while Fugett Middle School team “The Cougars” and Valley Forge Middle School team “Jolly Ranchers” tied for third place with 126 points each.
The CCIU credited the success of the 2026 Chester County Knowledge Bowl to the efforts of volunteers, educators, coaches, West Chester University staff, and families who supported students throughout the competition season and event day.
Organizers also recognized all 48 participating teams for their preparation, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm during the event.
The Chester County Knowledge Bowl is expected to return next year, continuing its mission of encouraging academic excellence, collaboration, and confidence among middle school students across the county.
