FTC Warns Alphabet Over Alleged Partisan Gmail Practices

WASHINGTON, D.C.Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson has issued a letter to Alphabet, Inc. CEO Sundar Pichai, warning the company about potential violations of the FTC Act tied to Gmail’s email filtering practices.

The letter responds to reports suggesting Gmail may employ partisan methods in determining which messages are flagged as spam. Ferguson reminded Alphabet that the company remains subject to the consumer protection provisions of the FTC Act and emphasized its responsibility to avoid practices that could be considered deceptive or unfair.
