Teen Meeting Turns Violent in Newark Robbery Case

NEWARK, DE — Two 17-year-old Newark males are facing felony charges after police said an attempted robbery at an apartment complex left a victim injured.

According to the New Castle County Division of Police, officers responded at about 6:27 p.m. May 22 to Iron Hill Apartments in the unit block of Brookedge Court for a report of an attempted robbery during which the victim had been assaulted.

Because of the circumstances, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Unit responded and took over the case, police said.

Investigators determined that the victim had planned to meet with two 17-year-old males. During the encounter, one of the juveniles allegedly produced a handgun and demanded the victim’s money, according to police.

Police said the victim refused, and the suspect allegedly struck the victim in the head with the handgun, causing injuries. Both suspects fled before officers arrived.

Detectives later identified both juveniles and took them into custody on separate dates, according to police.

On June 1, a 17-year-old Newark male was charged with attempted first-degree robbery and second-degree conspiracy. He was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the New Castle County Juvenile Detention Center on $22,500 cash bail.

On June 17, a second 17-year-old Newark male was charged with attempted first-degree robbery, aggravated menacing, second-degree conspiracy, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony and third-degree assault. He was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the New Castle County Juvenile Detention Center on $36,500 secured bail.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
