Months-Long Drug Probe Ends With Gun, Heroin Seizure

WILMINGTON, DE — A Wilmington man is facing multiple felony charges after a months-long Delaware State Police narcotics investigation culminated in the execution of a search warrant and the seizure of suspected heroin, a firearm, and other evidence, authorities said.

According to Delaware State Police, the Special Investigations Unit began an investigation in February after receiving information that 33-year-old Shahir McCoy was allegedly selling heroin in Wilmington.

State police said detectives conducted surveillance over several months and allegedly observed McCoy participating in multiple suspected drug transactions. Investigators subsequently identified a residence in the 100 block of North Franklin Street as a location connected to the investigation and obtained a search warrant for the property.

On Wednesday, May 27, members of the Delaware State Police Special Operations Response Team, assisted by the Wilmington Police Department, executed the search warrant and took McCoy into custody without incident, according to investigators.

During the search, detectives reported recovering approximately 420 bags of suspected heroin, a loaded handgun, additional ammunition, approximately 26 grams of marijuana, digital scales, and other items police described as drug-related paraphernalia.

Investigators also alleged that McCoy has a prior felony conviction that prohibits him from legally possessing firearms.

According to state police, McCoy was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony; possession of a controlled substance, Tier 3 quantity; possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, Tier 3 quantity; possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited who also possesses a controlled substance; possession of a firearm by a person prohibited following a prior violent crime; nine counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance; three counts of possession of a controlled substance, Tier 1 quantity; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said McCoy was taken to Troop 2 for processing, arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2, and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after bail was set at $210,200 cash.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
