Man Charged Weeks After Brutal Baseball Bat Assault

WILMINGTON, DE — A Wilmington man has been charged in connection with an assault that left a 55-year-old victim seriously injured last month, according to Wilmington Police.

Police reported that officers responded to a local hospital at approximately 11:29 p.m. on May 29 after a 55-year-old man arrived on foot seeking treatment for serious injuries.

According to investigators, officers learned that the victim had allegedly been assaulted by a suspect armed with a baseball bat in the 400 block of North Scott Street. The case was assigned to Detective Johnnie Everett of the Criminal Investigations Division.

Police said Detective Everett identified 50-year-old Michael Johnson as a suspect during the investigation and obtained warrants for his arrest.

According to police, Johnson was taken into custody without incident on June 11 in the 400 block of North Lincoln Street with assistance from the Uniformed Services Division and the Crisis Management Tactical Team.

Johnson was charged with first-degree assault and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, police reported.

Court records cited by police show Johnson was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 20 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $126,000 cash-only bail.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
