WILMINGTON, DE — The Delaware State Police are investigating a tragic single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Newark woman and left another individual seriously injured late Sunday night.
According to authorities, the incident unfolded on June 30, 2025, at approximately 10:08 p.m., as a severe thunderstorm swept across New Castle County. A 2015 Lexus RX was traveling westbound on Lancaster Pike, approaching Hedgerow Place, when a tree suddenly fell into the roadway, blocking the vehicle’s path.
In an attempt to avoid the obstruction, the driver of the Lexus swerved left but was unable to evade the falling tree. The tree ultimately struck the front of the SUV, resulting in a catastrophic collision.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene and pronounced the front-seat passenger, a 79-year-old woman from Newark, deceased. Her identity is being withheld pending notification of her family. The driver, also a 79-year-old man from Newark, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit has assumed responsibility for the investigation. Officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash to come forward. Master Corporal J. Forester is leading the investigative effort and can be reached at 302-365-8485.
