PHILADELPHIA, PA — Swedish Christmas ham, traditional meatballs, pickled herring and a festive holiday marketplace will bring the flavors of Scandinavia to Philadelphia as the American Swedish Historical Museum celebrates its 100th anniversary with an annual Julbord Dinner.
The holiday gathering takes place Friday, Dec. 4, 2026, from 5 to 9 p.m., offering guests an opportunity to experience a Swedish Christmas tradition centered on food, family and togetherness.
Prepared by Jeffrey A. Miller Hospitality Group, the dinner features a traditional Swedish smörgåsbord, with an assortment of dishes served buffet-style. Guests can also browse a selection of Christmas Market vendors before sitting down for the evening’s feast.
A Swedish Christmas Tradition Comes to Life
Julbord, meaning “Christmas Table,” is a centerpiece of Swedish holiday celebrations, traditionally enjoyed on Christmas Eve.
The elaborate meal brings family and friends together around a generous assortment of foods, with traditions that reflect centuries of Scandinavian culinary history.
Some dishes trace their origins to Viking-era midwinter solstice celebrations, while others became popular around the turn of the 20th century. Swedish meatballs, now among the most recognizable offerings, did not become a regular feature of the modern Julbord until the 1970s.
At the American Swedish Historical Museum, guests can sample Christmas ham, several varieties of herring, meatballs, salads and breads prepared for the occasion.
The buffet offers an introduction to Swedish holiday cuisine for newcomers while providing a familiar celebration for those with Scandinavian heritage.
Holiday Shopping Before Dinner
The evening begins at 5 p.m., when guests can explore a selection of vendors from the museum’s Christmas Market.
The vendors will be open until 7 p.m., offering an opportunity to shop for seasonal gifts while enjoying drinks and hors d’oeuvres before dinner.
The Julbord buffet will be served at 7 p.m., giving guests time to settle in for a shared holiday meal.
This year’s celebration also coincides with the American Swedish Historical Museum’s centennial, adding significance to an event that honors Swedish culture and traditions.
A Holiday Gathering for Family and Friends
While the Julbord is known for its variety of traditional foods, its central purpose is bringing people together.
The museum’s annual dinner invites guests to share that experience with family members and friends, celebrating the holiday season through a custom that has endured across generations.
Tickets are available for individual guests, children and groups, with a full-table option accommodating eight people.
Reservations must be completed by Nov. 30.
