PHILADELPHIA, PA — For one extraordinary Sunday each year, a South Philadelphia restaurant transforms lunch into an eight-hour celebration of food, culture, storytelling, wine, music, and sheer endurance.

Le Virtù’s famed La Panarda returns on Sunday, June 14, bringing back what is widely considered one of the most elaborate and authentic Italian dining experiences in the United States — a 40-plus-course feast rooted in a 369-year-old tradition from the Abruzzo region of Italy.

Held at the acclaimed East Passyunk restaurant, the immersive communal meal stretches from noon until evening, inviting guests to surrender to a marathon-style celebration inspired by the sacred Panarda tradition still observed annually in the mountain village of Villavallelonga, Abruzzo.

“This feast is our highest expression of that belief,” said co-owner Francis Cratil-Cretarola. “La Panarda is a love letter to both of our homes, Abruzzo and South Philadelphia.”

Unlike a traditional tasting menu or upscale dinner service, La Panarda is intentionally excessive, joyful, and deeply communal. Guests share long tables while course after course arrives over several hours, accompanied by more than 10 curated wine pairings selected by sommelier Chris O’Brien.

“La Panarda is not a tasting menu nor a basic prix fixe dinner,” Cratil-Cretarola said. “It is an exercise in Abruzzese lunacy.”

A Tradition Dating Back to 1657

The original Panarda tradition dates back nearly four centuries in Villavallelonga, a small town in central Italy’s Abruzzo region where families continue gathering each January to honor Sant’Antonio Abate, patron saint of agriculture and animals.

The feast traditionally unfolds overnight with dozens of courses, music, storytelling, dancing, and community celebrations spread across multiple homes and piazzas. Organizers say Le Virtù’s annual event is the only authentic American interpretation of that historic tradition.

Since debuting the event in 2011, Le Virtù’s Panarda has drawn national and international attention from food writers, travel journalists, and Italian cultural organizations.

This year’s feast will once again feature Executive Chef Andrew Wood’s expansive “pan-Abruzzo” menu philosophy, using locally sourced ingredients while honoring culinary traditions from Abruzzo’s coastline, countryside, and mountain villages.

The menu will unfold in two major movements — seafood-focused dishes inspired by the Adriatic coast followed by rich meat-centered offerings tied to the region’s pastoral interior traditions.

Early featured dishes include:

  • Brodetto alla Vastese seafood stew
  • Stuffed calamari with tomatoes and ceci
  • Scallop crudo with fava and lemon
  • Salt-crusted golden tilefish with salsa verde
  • Frascareglie pasta with ragù
  • Maccarune i Sant’Antonie with lamb ragù
  • Timballo alla teramana
  • Ceppe pasta with lobster and peperoncini
  • Roasted whole suckling pig
  • Grilled local lamb
  • Aged ribeye with Montepulciano sauce

A Dining Experience Unlike Any Other

Organizers say the spirit of the event goes far beyond the food itself.

Guests are encouraged to embrace the communal atmosphere, linger at the table, meet new people, and fully participate in a culinary tradition centered on abundance, hospitality, and connection.

“Nothing gives us greater pleasure than inviting guests from Philadelphia and beyond to join us on this truly special day each year,” Cratil-Cretarola said.
