TINICUM TWP, PA — Drivers near Philadelphia International Airport should prepare for an overnight closure and detour on westbound Route 291 (Industrial Highway) as bridge construction continues over the Conrail tracks in Tinicum Township.

Westbound Route 291 will close nightly between Scott Way/Bartram Avenue and Route 420 (Wanamaker Avenue). Drivers will be directed to use Scott Way/Bartram Avenue, Interstate 95, and Route 420 (Wanamaker Avenue) around the closure.
A lane closure with flagging will also restrict eastbound Route 291 along the same section during the overnight work hours.
Motorists should plan extra time when traveling near the work zone or along the posted detour because backups and delays may occur. Drivers heading to or from the airport should consider alternate routes and allow additional time for their trips.
All scheduled work is weather dependent and may be postponed if conditions are unfavorable.
The restrictions are part of a $26.5 million project to replace the deteriorating twin bridges carrying Route 291 over the Conrail tracks. The new two-span steel plate girder structure will be approximately nine feet wider than the existing bridge, carrying two 12-foot lanes and eight-foot shoulders in each direction.
The project will also accommodate a future multiuse trail behind a protective concrete barrier on the eastbound side. Additional improvements include roadway approach repairs and the installation of new signs, pavement markings, guiderail and traffic signals at the Bartram Avenue/Scott Way intersection.
