PHILADELPHIA, PA — Drivers traveling through South Philadelphia this week should prepare for overnight delays on Interstate 95 as PennDOT crews continue line striping and barrier installation tied to a major interstate bridge repair project.
At a Glance
- Roads Affected: Interstate 95 between Packer Avenue and Christian Street
- Dates: Tuesday, May 26, through Friday, May 29
- Times: 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM nightly
- Reason: Line striping, barrier installation, and bridge repair work
PennDOT said lane closures will affect both northbound and southbound I-95 each night throughout the construction zone.
Motorists should expect backups and slower travel during overnight hours as crews work along one of Philadelphia’s busiest highway corridors. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time, seek alternate routes when possible, and remain alert while traveling through active work areas.
The overnight operations are part of a $56.1 million infrastructure improvement project focused on repairing and preserving critical interstate bridges along the I-95 corridor in Philadelphia.
According to PennDOT, the work includes repairs to deteriorated bridge decks, structural steel, concrete beams, bridge railings, guiderails, and sign supports. Crews also are replacing expansion joints, repairing substructures beneath the bridges, and upgrading roadway lighting to LED fixtures.
Additional work includes repainting overhead steel sign structures and clearing debris beneath bridge spans to improve long-term safety and reliability along the interstate.
IEW Construction Group, Inc., based in Hamilton, New Jersey, is serving as the project’s general contractor. The project is funded entirely through federal dollars.
PennDOT noted that all scheduled work is weather dependent and could be adjusted if conditions change.
