According to PennDOT, westbound Route 291 (Industrial Highway) will be closed and detoured between east of the Route 291 and Bartram Avenue/Scott Way intersection and Stevens Drive from Tuesday, May 26, through Thursday, May 28 during overnight work hours.
During the closure, drivers will be directed to use Bartram Avenue, Interstate 95 South to Exit 9A (Route 420), and Route 420 (Wanamaker Avenue).
Additional overnight lane closures with flagging in both directions are scheduled from Friday, May 29, through Tuesday, June 2 along the same stretch of Route 291.
Motorists should expect backups and slower travel conditions near the work zone and along detour routes. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time and seek alternate routes whenever possible.
The roadway work is part of PennDOT’s $26.5 million project to replace the aging twin bridges carrying Route 291 over Conrail tracks. Under the project, crews will construct a wider two-span steel plate girder bridge featuring two travel lanes in each direction, eight-foot shoulders, and accommodations for a future multiuse trail on the eastbound side.
Additional improvements include roadway approach repairs, updated pavement markings, guiderail installation, new signage, and upgraded traffic signals at the Bartram Avenue/Scott Way intersection.
J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, is the general contractor for the federally funded project.
