PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that a full overnight closure is scheduled this week on southbound Interstate 95 in Center City Philadelphia as part of the $329 million I-95 CAP project, which is replacing and expanding the covered section of the interstate between Chestnut and Walnut streets.
Weather permitting, the closure will take place Thursday, October 30, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning. Both southbound I-95 and the ramp from eastbound I-676 to southbound I-95 will be closed between the I-676 Central Philadelphia/Callowhill Street (Exit 22) and Washington Avenue/Columbus Boulevard (Exit 20) interchanges.
During the closure, motorists traveling southbound on I-95 will be detoured to I-676 (Exit 22), continue to Callowhill Street, then follow a local detour along 6th Street, Race Street, and Columbus Boulevard to re-enter I-95 south at the E. Morris Street/Water Street ramp. Drivers on eastbound I-676 will be directed to exit at 6th Street, proceed along Race Street, and turn onto Columbus Boulevard to reach the same on-ramp.
PennDOT advises travelers to plan ahead and allow for additional time when navigating the area, as heavy traffic and delays are expected along detour routes.
