PHILADELPHIA, PA — Holiday shoppers will have room to stroll, browse and celebrate in the heart of Philadelphia when Open Streets: West Walnut returns for its final event of 2026, transforming several Center City blocks into a pedestrian-only destination filled with seasonal entertainment.

The free event takes place Sunday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closing portions of Walnut and 18th streets to vehicles while welcoming visitors to explore local boutiques, national retailers, restaurants and holiday attractions.

Organized by Center City District (CCD), the holiday edition builds on a program that has attracted an average of more than 11,000 visitors per week since launching in September 2024.

An Ice Piano Takes Shape on Walnut Street

One of the day’s featured attractions will be a baby grand piano carved entirely from ice at the intersection of 18th and Walnut streets.

Beginning at 10 a.m., artists from Ice Sculpture Philly will demonstrate their craft as they transform blocks of ice into the musical instrument. The completed sculpture will become the setting for a live performance later in the afternoon.

Visitors will also encounter strolling bubble performers, holiday carolers, festive miniature golf and an appearance by Santa Claus.

The Fulton Fun Zone will offer a holiday movie marathon, providing families with a place to relax between shopping and other activities.

Entertainment will continue throughout the day, with a complete schedule available through Center City District.

A Holiday Shopping Experience Without Traffic

Open Streets will close Walnut Street between Broad and 19th streets, along with 18th Street between Chestnut and Locust streets, creating a walkable shopping district for the day.

Participating businesses may extend their operations onto sidewalks, while retailers and restaurants will offer seasonal promotions and special discounts.

Unlike traditional street festivals, Open Streets does not feature additional street vendors. Instead, the program encourages visitors to shop and dine at established businesses along the route and in surrounding neighborhoods.

“Center City is the only place in the region you can find local boutiques and national brands all within a short walk of award-winning restaurants and classic holiday traditions,” said CCD President and CEO Prema Katari Gupta.

“We can’t wait to welcome families and friends from across the Philadelphia area to shop for gifts along Walnut Street during our final Open Streets of the year.”

Holiday Attractions Within Walking Distance

The December event also gives visitors an opportunity to combine shopping with several of Philadelphia’s established seasonal attractions.

Nearby destinations include the Rothman Orthopaedics Ice Rink and Cabin at Dilworth Park, Christmas Village and the Made in Philadelphia Holiday Market.

Families can also explore the Comcast Holiday Spectacular or attend a performance of The Nutcracker at the Academy of Music.

With these attractions within walking distance, visitors can make Open Streets part of a larger day of holiday activities in Center City.
