PHILADELPHIA, PA — NBME appointed health care executive Suzanne T. Anderson as its next president and chief executive officer, placing a veteran hospital system leader in charge of the medical assessment organization beginning October 19 as longtime CEO Peter J. Katsufrakis prepares to retire.
Katsufrakis, who has led NBME since 2017, will retire November 30, 2026. His departure follows nearly two decades with the organization, which plays a central role in physician assessment and medical licensing examinations.
Anderson most recently served as regional president of SSM Health Wisconsin, overseeing operations, strategy, finance, human resources and governance across the greater Madison region.
She previously was president of Virginia Mason Medical Center and executive vice president of Virginia Mason Health System in Seattle. Her responsibilities included enterprise operations, finance, information technology, supply chains, human resources and strategic initiatives.
Anderson also has held governance positions with NBME, the United States Medical Licensing Examination program, the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates and the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Katsufrakis oversaw changes to the United States Medical Licensing Examination, guided the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic and expanded its work across medical education during his tenure.
Anderson holds an MBA from Vanderbilt University and a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Notre Dame.
