According to PennDOT, weekday lane closures with flagging will occur on Byberry Road between Evans Street and Worthington Road during daytime work hours.
The initial phase of work will include tree clearing and grubbing as crews begin preliminary construction activities tied to the multi-year bridge replacement project.
Motorists traveling through the area should expect backups and slower traffic conditions while lane restrictions remain in place. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and seek alternate routes when possible.
PennDOT said the existing bridge carrying Byberry Road over the CSX Railroad was installed in 1996 as an emergency temporary structure after the original bridge severely deteriorated. Officials described the current bridge as being in serious overall condition with advanced deterioration.
Under the project, PennDOT’s contractor will replace the structure with a new single-span composite steel bridge featuring wider travel lanes, a dedicated right-turn lane, sidewalks, upgraded traffic signals, and roadway improvements near MAST Charter School and the nearby Post Office.
Construction will occur in three stages to maintain two lanes of traffic during peak travel periods, though periodic detours and additional lane closures are expected throughout the project.
PennDOT said construction activity through 2026 and 2027 will primarily focus on utility relocation work, with the full project scheduled for completion in 2030.
J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, is the general contractor for the federally funded project.
