Madrigal Adds J&J R&D Chief to Board as MASH Push Expands

CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — Madrigal Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: MDGL) appointed Johnson & Johnson research executive John C. Reed, M.D., Ph.D., to its board of directors as the biopharmaceutical company builds on the launch of Rezdiffra and seeks to expand its drug-development pipeline for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, or MASH.

Reed is executive vice president of Innovative Medicine, Research & Development at Johnson & Johnson and a member of the pharmaceutical and medical-technology company’s executive committee. He oversees research and development spanning oncology, immunology, neuroscience and other therapeutic areas.

The appointment adds a veteran pharmaceutical R&D executive to Madrigal’s board as the company moves beyond the initial commercialization of Rezdiffra and focuses on longer-term development opportunities in MASH.

“John’s appointment reflects Madrigal’s continued commitment to scientific excellence and long-term innovation,” Chief Executive Officer Bill Sibold stated. He pointed to Reed’s experience in drug discovery, translational medicine and global R&D strategy as areas expected to support Madrigal’s board and management.

Reed joined Johnson & Johnson in April 2023 after holding executive leadership positions at Sanofi and Roche, where he served on the companies’ respective executive committees.

Earlier, he was president and chief executive officer of the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, now known as Sanford Burnham Prebys, where he established disease-focused research centers and technology organizations.

Madrigal Chairman Julian Baker cited Reed’s experience advancing medicines and building research organizations as relevant to the company’s efforts to expand its position in MASH.

Reed has authored more than 900 scientific publications and holds more than 130 patents, according to Madrigal. He is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Virginia and both a medical degree and doctorate in immunology from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
