PHILADELPHIA, PA — For diners with celiac disease, enjoying a restaurant meal can mean carefully studying menus, questioning ingredients and worrying about cross-contact. On Thursday, Nov. 5, South Philadelphia’s Le Virtù will offer a different experience: an entire evening of Italian dining with every dish and drink prepared to be gluten-free.

The restaurant at 1927 E. Passyunk Avenue will host its first all-gluten-free dining night from 5 to 9 p.m., featuring a complete à la carte menu inspired by the culinary traditions of Abruzzo, Italy.

Executive Chef Andrew Wood and his team will prepare gluten-free versions of restaurant favorites alongside specialty dishes, including handmade-style pastas, braised meats, seafood and traditional Italian desserts.

To prepare for the event, the restaurant plans to conduct a thorough cleaning of its kitchen, bar and food preparation areas after closing Wednesday, Nov. 4. The special menu is intended to accommodate guests with celiac disease and others who avoid gluten.

“We know so many people in our lives and over the years that are now GF and that have celiac — including people in and out of the industry,” Wood said.

He explained that dietary restrictions can affect not only what people eat but also their ability to enjoy dining experiences with friends and family.

“We want to create a special night where we turn the ‘you can’t’ into ‘now you can,'” Wood said. “We want our patrons and friends to have a safe space where we can all share in our love of food again.”

A Full Italian Menu Without Gluten

Rather than offering a limited selection of modified dishes, Le Virtù will make its entire Nov. 5 menu gluten-free, from appetizers and pasta courses to entrées, side dishes and desserts.

The evening will showcase the flavors of Abruzzo, the central Italian region that has inspired the restaurant since its opening in 2007.

Among the featured pasta dishes is buckwheat tortiglioni with octopus ragù, tomato, basil, peperoncini, cuttlefish ink, black chickpeas and lemon.

Other selections include spaghetti with tomato-braised goat ragù, rosemary and pecorino; green pea fusilli with porcini sauce, local mushrooms and spinach; and rigatoni alla Vittoria with roasted butternut squash, Abruzzese saffron, smoked bacon and pecorino.

For diners who prefer a meat or seafood entrée, the menu includes Peposo, a red wine-braised beef shoulder served with black pepper, rosemary and Yukon Gold potato purée.

Additional entrées include grilled half chicken with roasted potatoes and salsa verde, bacon-wrapped pork loin stuffed with caciocavallo cheese, and seared red snapper with tomatoes, roasted peppers and saffron butter sauce.

Vegetarian options include grilled pumpkin alla Parmigiana with braised greens, tomato fondue, toasted pumpkin seeds and Parmigiano-Reggiano.

The appetizer menu will feature house-cured salumi, regional cheeses, grilled provolone, roasted pork belly skewers and a selection of vegetable preparations.

Traditional Italian Desserts Complete the Experience

The gluten-free approach will extend through the final course, with several desserts inspired by Italian traditions.

Guests can choose Lu Parrozz’, a flourless almond cake served with orange, saffron and dark chocolate ganache.

Other offerings include ricotta cheesecake with citrus syrup, chocolate olive oil cake with red wine-poached pears, and selections of gelato and sorbet.

The restaurant also plans to serve gluten-free beverages throughout the evening.

“For Le Virtù’s first GF night we wanted to go big — and offer top quality dishes, unique things you can’t find on any other GF menu within hours of Philly, and to keep to our Abruzzo flavors and traditions,” Wood said.

The menu reflects the restaurant’s longstanding emphasis on the regional cuisine of Abruzzo, where traditional dishes draw on ingredients and techniques associated with farmers, shepherds and coastal communities.

Making Restaurant Dining More Accessible

For people with celiac disease, a medically necessary gluten-free diet can make dining out complicated.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition in which consuming gluten can trigger an immune response that damages the small intestine. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.

Avoiding gluten involves more than selecting dishes without traditional wheat-based ingredients. Cross-contact during food preparation can also pose a concern.

Le Virtù plans to address those concerns through its overnight cleaning procedures and by preparing only gluten-free dishes and drinks for the event.

Although the restaurant describes the evening as celiac-safe, diners with celiac disease or other medical dietary restrictions should confirm preparation procedures and ingredient details directly with the staff.

Wood explained that the restaurant already offers numerous gluten-free options and regularly hears from customers seeking additional choices.

“We already have many GF options on the menu and get requests from our loyal customers all the time for more,” he said. “This is a way for Cathy, Francis and I to really offer something special and serve our community in an expanded way.”

The event also reflects growing interest in dedicated gluten-free dining experiences across the Philadelphia region.

For Le Virtù, the evening represents an expansion of its existing menu offerings rather than a permanent conversion to an exclusively gluten-free restaurant.

A Taste of Abruzzo on East Passyunk Avenue

Le Virtù has specialized in the cuisine of Abruzzo since owners Francis Cratil-Cretarola and Catherine Lee opened the restaurant in 2007.

The couple’s connection to the region extends beyond the restaurant. They have traveled extensively in Abruzzo, participated in culinary and cultural programs, and maintained a home in the region.

Their approach emphasizes traditional recipes, seasonal ingredients and relationships with local farms and food producers.

The restaurant’s Nov. 5 event will bring those traditions to a menu designed specifically for guests seeking gluten-free Italian cuisine.

Dining will be available in the restaurant’s indoor dining rooms and bar area. Weather permitting, the restaurant may also offer seating in its outdoor patio and garden.

All dishes will be available individually, allowing guests to order according to their preferences without purchasing a fixed-price ticket.
