InterDigital Pushes VVC Toward Large-Scale Video Delivery

InterDigital

WILMINGTON, DE — InterDigital Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC) will demonstrate advances in Versatile Video Coding at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam beginning Sept. 11, as the video-compression standard moves from development and testing toward commercial deployment.

The Wilmington-based wireless, video and AI research company will demonstrate VVC technology with Japan Broadcasting Corporation, or NHK, and members of the Media Coding Industry Forum during IBC, which runs through Sept. 14.

The demonstrations focus on VVC multilayer coding, which allows different versions or enhancements of video content to be delivered through coordinated layers rather than requiring each version to be encoded independently.

InterDigital and NHK will demonstrate content overlay and spatial and quality scalability using a VVC multilayer software decoder.

NHK’s demonstration combines VVC multilayer video with MPEG-H 3D audio coding. A base video layer can be supplemented with an enhancement layer containing content such as captions or sign-language translation, allowing viewers to select different presentations while coordinating changes in video and audio.

InterDigital will separately demonstrate the use of an enhancement layer to improve video quality for broadcast and streaming applications. The company said the approach can provide greater coding efficiency than independently encoding different versions of the same content.

The work corresponds with a VVC multilayer coding verification test published in April as MPEG document AG 5 N208.

InterDigital will also participate with NHK and other Media Coding Industry Forum members at booth 2.B13, where demonstrations will focus on additional VVC capabilities and their application to large-scale video delivery.

The industry group is seeking to advance commercial adoption of VVC as deployments move beyond experimental use. According to InterDigital, the codec is progressing to national-scale commercial deployment in markets including Brazil.
