WILMINGTON, DE — InterDigital Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC) has expanded its patent licensing business into electric vehicle charging equipment through a new agreement with KEBA Energy Automation GmbH, extending the company’s wireless connectivity licensing strategy beyond traditional communications devices.
The agreement licenses certain KEBA electric vehicle charger products under InterDigital’s portfolio of patents covering 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi technologies, the company announced. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The deal reflects the continued application of standardized wireless technologies in connected industrial and consumer products, an area that has become an increasingly important market for companies that generate revenue from intellectual property licensing.
Chief Licensing Officer Julia Mattis said the agreement demonstrates how connectivity standards are being adopted in additional product categories beyond mobile devices.
“This license reflects the expansion of connectivity into new verticals,” Mattis said, adding that the company expects “continued licensing momentum as more manufacturers implement our technology across new device categories in the IoT market.”
InterDigital develops wireless, video and artificial intelligence technologies and licenses its patent portfolio to manufacturers and service providers worldwide. Its intellectual property is used in products ranging from smartphones and consumer electronics to connected vehicles, Internet of Things devices and cloud-based video services.
