PHILADELPHIA, PA — Healthcare technology company Atalan has launched a workforce intelligence platform for nurses aimed at helping hospitals identify burnout and retention risks earlier as the industry faces persistent staffing shortages and rising turnover.
The new product, Atalan for Nursing, expands the company’s clinician retention technology beyond physicians and advanced practice providers and comes as health systems grapple with an aging nursing workforce and mounting recruitment challenges.
According to data cited by the company, nurse turnover averages 16.4% annually nationwide. Nearly 40% of nurses say they intend to leave the workforce by 2029, and the U.S. is projected to face a nursing shortage of about 350,000 workers, or roughly 10% of demand, by 2027.
Atalan said its platform uses machine learning to analyze workforce, staffing, scheduling, operational and clinical data to identify retention risks and emerging signs of burnout up to 12 months before nurses leave. The company said the platform delivers insights with more than 75% predictive accuracy, though it described the technology as a tool to support planning rather than guarantee outcomes.
“Nurse leaders have a deep understanding of their teams; they see the strain and know where pressure is building,” Chief Executive Officer and Founder Tiffany Chan said in a statement. “Atalan for Nursing doesn’t replace that expertise. It strengthens it by providing data to validate nurse leaders’ instincts and support the changes they know are needed.”
The platform is designed for chief nursing officers, nurse directors, human resources leaders and health system executives seeking to improve retention and workforce stability.
Multi-state health system SSM Health, which has used Atalan’s clinician retention platform for physicians and advanced practice clinicians since 2023, served as an early collaborator in developing the nursing-focused version of the software.
“It’s critically important to be able to identify emerging patterns of burnout,” said Julie Winegar, director of workforce planning at SSM Health. “The ability to intervene and provide support to our team members at the right time makes a meaningful difference.”
The launch reflects growing investment in predictive analytics tools across healthcare as hospitals seek to reduce turnover costs and maintain staffing levels amid ongoing labor shortages.
