RIDLEY TWP, PA — Final construction activities are scheduled to commence next week along MacDade Boulevard in Ridley Township, signaling the near-completion of a $19 million infrastructure improvement project led by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The comprehensive effort aims to enhance travel safety and traffic efficiency on a heavily traveled section of MacDade Boulevard and at the northbound Interstate 476 (I-476) and MacDade Boulevard Interchange.
From Monday, December 9, through Friday, December 20, single-lane closures will be in effect on weekdays between Bullens Lane and School Lane, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. PennDOT has cautioned drivers to allow extra travel time, as delays are expected in the area. All scheduled activities remain contingent upon favorable weather conditions.
The project, financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funding, represents a concerted effort to improve safety and reduce congestion for motorists and pedestrians alike. Key updates include the construction of an eastbound left turn lane on MacDade Boulevard at Bullens Lane, which is expected to reduce rear-end collisions and improve visibility for turning vehicles. Additionally, auxiliary lanes have been added to northbound I-476, both north of the MacDade Boulevard Interchange and south of the U.S. 1 Interchange, to help ease the flow of traffic during peak hours.
Significant improvements have also been made to the interchange itself, including the widening and realignment of the westbound ramp from northbound I-476 to MacDade Boulevard. The ramp now terminates at a new “T” intersection, complete with traffic signals to enhance navigability and driver safety.
Further enhancements include the construction of a new pedestrian bridge over Crum Creek, running parallel to MacDade Boulevard, aimed at improving accessibility for walkers and cyclists. Upgrades to traffic signals, the installation of two dynamic message boards, and the addition of new curb ramps and guiderails are also part of the project, ensuring better connectivity and compliance with modern safety standards.
Allan Myers, LP, based in Worcester, Montgomery County, serves as the project’s general contractor. Physical construction is on track for completion by late December, marking a milestone in the effort to modernize and streamline local travel.
