ChristianaCare Opens Delaware County Hospital as Demand Grows

ChristianaCare

WILMINGTON, DE — ChristianaCare plans to open a new neighborhood hospital in Aston, Pennsylvania, this month, expanding emergency and inpatient capacity in Delaware County as healthcare providers face growing demand and access challenges across the region.

The facility, located at 700 Turner Industrial Way, is expected to begin operations following final approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. ChristianaCare said the hospital is projected to serve about 15,000 patients annually and will provide 24-hour emergency care, inpatient services, imaging, laboratory testing and virtual specialty consultations.

The hospital is the first phase of ChristianaCare’s planned Aston Campus and represents part of the health system’s broader expansion strategy in southeastern Pennsylvania. A second-floor outpatient health center offering primary care, cardiology, diagnostic and imaging services is scheduled to open in fall 2026.

“For too long, people in Delaware County have had to travel farther and wait longer for care,” ChristianaCare President and CEO Dr. Janice Nevin said. “With the Aston Campus, we are bringing high-quality emergency and inpatient care closer to home.”

The hospital was developed through a joint venture with Emerus Holdings, which operates neighborhood hospitals nationwide. Emerus will oversee daily operations of the facility.

ChristianaCare Hospital, Aston includes a full-service emergency department and 10 inpatient and observation beds. The facility is equipped with CT scanners, X-ray and ultrasound imaging, and on-site laboratory services.

Hospital officials said patients will also have access to virtual consultations with specialists in cardiology, infectious disease, critical care and hospital medicine.

ChristianaCare said the facility differs from urgent care centers and standalone emergency departments because it offers inpatient care and around-the-clock physician coverage within a licensed hospital setting.

The Aston Campus represents an investment of approximately $50.9 million and is expected to create 75 jobs. ChristianaCare said the location was selected following an analysis of population growth, healthcare access needs and service gaps in the region.

The project follows the August 2025 opening of ChristianaCare’s West Grove neighborhood hospital in Chester County. The health system also plans to open a third neighborhood hospital campus in Springfield in fall 2027.

ChristianaCare has expanded its Pennsylvania footprint in recent years through physician practices and outpatient services in Broomall, Glen Mills, Havertown and Media as it seeks to strengthen access to primary, specialty and diagnostic care across Delaware County.
