PHILADELPHIA, PA — Axalta Coating Systems (NYSE: AXTA) Chief Technology Officer Robert K. Roop received the 2026 Paint & Coatings Industry Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing nearly four decades of technical leadership spanning coatings research, product development and global technology operations.
Roop was honored at the Coatings Trends & Technologies Summit in Lombard, Illinois. The award recognizes career contributions that have advanced the coatings industry.
Roop began his career with DuPont in 1989 and held roles across research, product development, manufacturing, plant management and global technology leadership before joining Axalta when it became an independent company in 2013.
He became Axalta’s chief technology officer in 2019 and now leads a global organization of about 1,300 scientists, engineers and technical professionals across 21 product development laboratories.
His work has included the development and commercialization of coatings technologies for transportation and industrial markets. Since 2019, technologies developed under his leadership have received 39 external awards, according to Axalta, including nine R&D 100 recognitions, 11 BIG Innovation Awards and 19 Edison Awards.
“Robert’s impact on Axalta and the coatings industry extends far beyond any single technology or achievement,” Chief Executive Officer and President Chris Villavarayan said.
Axalta also credited Roop with developing technical teams and strengthening the company’s global research organization.
“I’ve always been passionate about solving challenging problems through science, but the most rewarding part of my career has been working with talented people and helping them grow,” Roop said.
