WILMINGTON, DE — The Apache Software Foundation said it received a $1.5 million donation from Anthropic to support infrastructure, security operations, and community programs behind its open source software projects.
The funding will be used to maintain systems that support hundreds of Apache projects and thousands of contributors worldwide, as demand for reliable software infrastructure grows alongside advances in artificial intelligence.
Apache projects underpin a wide range of technologies, including data infrastructure, cloud systems, developer tools, and web platforms, and rely on vendor-neutral systems operated by the foundation to remain accessible and secure.
The organization provides governance, security oversight, legal protections, and operational support that allow open source communities to collaborate without control by a single company.
Vitaly Gudanets, chief information security officer at Anthropic, said the investment reflects the importance of maintaining that infrastructure as AI development accelerates.
“AI is accelerating rapidly, but it’s built on decades of open source infrastructure that must remain stable, secure, and independent,” Gudanets said. “Supporting the Apache Software Foundation is a direct investment in the resilience and integrity of the systems that modern AI — and the broader software ecosystem — depend on.”
Open source software developed through the foundation supports systems used in finance, healthcare, transportation, and internet services, often operating without direct visibility to end users.
Ruth Suehle, president of the Apache Software Foundation, said continued investment is required to sustain that reliability.
“Open source software is the foundation of modern digital life — largely in ways the average person is completely unaware of — and ASF projects are a critical part of that,” Suehle said. “Support like Anthropic’s helps ensure long-term strength, independence, and security of the systems that keep the world running.”
The foundation said the funding will support build systems, security processes, project services, and community resources needed to maintain its open source ecosystem.
