HARRISBURG, PA — The Shapiro Administration on Monday released the results of this year’s Operation Safe Stop, a statewide enforcement initiative targeting motorists who illegally pass stopped school buses. The annual campaign documented 188 violations across Pennsylvania — an increase from the 176 violations reported last year.
Operation Safe Stop is a one-day education and enforcement effort designed to raise awareness of Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law and promote safer driving near school zones. During the initiative, law enforcement agencies and participating school districts monitored bus routes and recorded violations to highlight the ongoing risks to student safety.
“Just one incident of passing a stopped school bus is too many, and this many violations in just one day is unacceptable,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “Responsibly sharing the road with students and school buses helps keep all of us safe.”
Under Pennsylvania law, motorists must stop at least 10 feet from a school bus with red lights flashing and the stop arm extended, regardless of their direction of travel — unless separated by a physical barrier. Violations carry a $250 fine, five points on a driver’s record, and a 60-day license suspension. Drivers caught by automated stop-arm cameras face a $300 fine.
“Although there are steep penalties for violating Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law, they pale in comparison to a tragedy that could occur if either a driver or a student is not paying attention,” said Corporal Zeina Black of the Pennsylvania State Police.
Officials urged drivers to remain alert, slow down near bus stops, and avoid distractions during student pickup and drop-off times. The Department of Education also encouraged parents to teach children basic bus stop safety, such as arriving early, staying clear of traffic, and never running after a departing bus.
Operation Safe Stop, coordinated by PennDOT, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Department of Education, continues to serve as a reminder that vigilance behind the wheel can prevent injuries and save lives.
