AVONDALE, PA — Avondale Borough will receive $645,118 in state transportation funding to fully reconstruct the 400 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, where underlying structural failures have caused recurring potholes and ruts that routine resurfacing cannot adequately repair, state Rep. Christina Sappey reported.

The funding comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Multimodal Transportation Fund and will allow the borough to address failures in the roadway’s subgrade and base rather than continue relying on surface repairs.

Officials have identified conditions along the affected block as an ongoing safety concern for residents and other motorists using Pennsylvania Avenue.

“I’m extremely pleased that the state is addressing the root causes of this roadway deterioration,” Sappey stated. “Improving this stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue will greatly improve safety and quality of life for residents and commuters using this critical route.”

The Avondale allocation is part of $54 million awarded to 50 transportation projects across Pennsylvania through the Multimodal Transportation Fund, which finances projects intended to improve the safety and reliability of the state’s transportation network.

State Sen. John I. Kane characterized the reconstruction as a “smart, much-needed step” for Avondale, pointing to the planned work below the road surface as critical to producing a more durable repair.

“Strengthening what’s beneath the road and upgrading the infrastructure folks rely on every day will make Pennsylvania Avenue safer, more reliable, and built to last,” Kane stated.

Avondale Borough Mayor Susan Rzucidlo described reconstruction of the 400 block as “long overdue” and credited Sappey and Kane with supporting the borough’s effort to secure funding.

“The work needed on the 400 block of Pennsylvania Avenue is long overdue, and this funding will make a meaningful difference for our residents and our community,” Rzucidlo stated.
