PHILADELPHIA, PA — Pennsylvania officials on Wednesday highlighted a $450 million nuclear medicine project in Philadelphia that state leaders say could strengthen cancer treatment development while adding hundreds of jobs to the region’s growing life sciences sector.
What This Means for You
- TerraPower Isotopes plans to build a new radioisotope manufacturing facility in Philadelphia’s Bellwether District.
- Pennsylvania is investing $10 million in the project through the Department of Community and Economic Development.
- State officials say the project is expected to create at least 225 jobs.
At a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday, Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Rick Siger highlighted the state’s investment in TerraPower Isotopes, a nuclear innovation company focused on producing radioisotopes used in medical treatments and research.
Radioisotopes are radioactive materials commonly used in medical imaging, cancer therapies, and pharmaceutical development.
The new manufacturing facility will be located in the Bellwether District, a redevelopment area in South Philadelphia being positioned as a hub for life sciences and advanced manufacturing industries.
State Backing Targets Life Sciences Growth
According to state officials, Pennsylvania committed $10 million toward the project as part of a broader effort to expand the Commonwealth’s life sciences economy and attract advanced medical manufacturing projects.
The Shapiro administration announced the project in March.
Officials said the facility is expected to create at least 225 new jobs once operational.
Siger said the project reflects Pennsylvania’s strategy of using targeted investments to attract high-growth industries tied to medicine, biotechnology, and research.
Facility Will Support Cancer Drug Development
State officials said the TerraPower Isotopes facility will manufacture radioisotopes intended for use in cancer-fighting drugs and other medical applications.
The project adds to a growing national push to increase domestic production of medical radioisotopes, which are critical components in certain cancer therapies and diagnostic imaging procedures.
Philadelphia has increasingly emerged as a major life sciences center because of its concentration of universities, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and biomedical research institutions.
Bellwether District Continues Redevelopment
The Bellwether District, formerly the site of the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery complex, is undergoing large-scale redevelopment focused on logistics, clean energy, and advanced industrial projects.
State officials have promoted the site as a long-term economic development hub capable of attracting major employers and manufacturing investment.
