Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR)

HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is seeking applicants for its NextGen Advisory Council. This council aims to bring diverse voices and experiences to the forefront of conservation efforts in the state.

A Call for Diversity and Inclusion

Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn announced the initiative, emphasizing the council’s role in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. “The NextGen Advisory Council plays a very important role in helping the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ work to expand access to outdoor recreation and to ensure public lands are welcoming to all,” Dunn said.

Council Responsibilities

Council members will help create lasting changes to ensure all Pennsylvanians, especially the next generation, can connect to public lands and natural resources. They will serve three-year terms, with the option to extend for another term. Meetings are held quarterly on the third Tuesdays of January, April, July, and October, and are conducted virtually to reduce travel and enhance accessibility.

Participants will gain valuable experience and skills, including:

  • Learning about careers in conservation, science, environment, and advocacy
  • Gaining leadership experience while enacting environmental change
  • Enhancing professional skills such as writing, presenting, and policy development

Background and Goals

The NextGen Advisory Council was launched in 2022 to increase public participation and diversify perspectives within the DCNR. The council’s efforts are part of Pennsylvania’s broader Outdoor Recreation Plan and the Penn’s Parks for All strategic plan.

The DCNR has implemented several initiatives to address diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, including:

  • An ongoing employee training program
  • Using geographic information system mapping to improve equity in grantmaking
  • Studying park and open space access across the state
  • Incorporating diversity and inclusion into daily operations within the agency

By expanding its advisory council, the DCNR aims to make outdoor spaces more accessible and welcoming for all people. This initiative reflects the state’s commitment to inclusive conservation efforts and the sustainable enjoyment of public lands for future generations.
