WASHINGTON, D.C. — Veterans and their families are receiving benefits significantly faster as federal officials report sharp declines in processing times and backlogs for disability and survivor claims.
What This Means for You
- Veterans are receiving disability and pension benefits faster than in recent years
- Backlogs of older claims have dropped sharply across multiple programs
- Processing accuracy has improved while turnaround times have decreased
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said average disability claim processing time has fallen to 80.7 days, down from 141.5 days, a reduction of more than 40 percent.
The agency also reported a 94.02 percent accuracy rate in claims decisions, the highest level recorded over the past two years.
Faster Processing Across Programs
The VA processes millions of claims annually, including disability benefits for service-related injuries and pensions for low-income veterans and survivors.
In fiscal year 2026, the agency has already processed more than 1.5 million claims and reached 1 million completed disability claims earlier in the year than ever before.
Pension claims — which provide financial support to wartime veterans with limited income — have also seen significant improvements. Initial Veterans Pension claims now average 57 days to complete, down from 170 days, while Survivors Pension claims have dropped from 172 days to 73 days.
Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, or DIC — a benefit for surviving spouses, children, or parents of service members who died in the line of duty or from service-related causes — has also improved, with processing times reduced to 73 days from 163 days.
Backlog Reduction
The VA said its backlog of claims older than 125 days has declined substantially.
In February, the number of pending claims fell below 100,000 for the first time since 2020.
Backlogged Veterans Pension claims dropped from 3,514 to 71, while Survivors Pension backlog cases fell from 3,391 to 115. DIC backlog claims also declined from 13,501 to 2,257.
Burial benefit claims, which help cover funeral and burial costs for veterans, are now processed in an average of 31 days, down from 70 days.
Next Steps
VA officials said the improvements were driven by increased staffing efficiency and expanded overtime efforts.
“Under the leadership of President Trump, VA is focused on delivering Veterans, families, caregivers and survivors all of the benefits they’ve earned as quickly as possible,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins.
