WASHINGTON, D.C. — More than 200,000 veterans have enrolled in Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare so far in 2026, expanding the federal health system’s patient base as the agency increases outreach to veterans who have not previously used VA services.
The new enrollments have generated more than 500,000 completed or scheduled healthcare visits, including more than 60,000 mental health appointments, according to the department.
More than 2,100 newly enrolled veterans also have received emergency care through the VA this year.
The department attributed the enrollment increase to expanded outreach intended to connect eligible veterans with healthcare and benefits that could reduce their families’ medical expenses.
The VA is extending that campaign through more than 140 “Freedom 250” events at hospitals, Vet Centers and other facilities this summer. The events are intended to reach additional unenrolled veterans during the nation’s 250th anniversary observances.
“We’re making an extra push this year to make sure Veterans know we’re here to get them the help they earned through their service,” VA Secretary Doug Collins said.
Veterans can find a nearby VA facility, review eligibility information at https://choose.va.gov/ or call the department’s 24-hour information line at 1-800-698-2411.
