WASHINGTON, D.C. — Workers with disabilities will have expanded access to financial planning tools and career guidance under an updated federal resource designed to support long-term economic independence.
What This Means for You
- New tools can help disabled workers plan finances and build savings
- Families and caregivers now have guidance to support financial decisions
- Resources cover every stage of employment, from job search to retirement
The U.S. Department of Labor announced updates to its “Secure Your Financial Future” toolkit, an online resource that provides practical financial education for individuals with disabilities.
The update adds new materials for service providers, family members, and support professionals — people who often assist individuals with disabilities in managing employment and financial decisions.
What the Toolkit Offers
The toolkit provides guidance across the full employment lifecycle, including preparing for work, starting a job, maintaining employment, changing jobs, and planning for retirement.
Officials said the resource is designed to help users understand how work affects disability benefits — government programs that provide financial or medical support — and how to manage income, savings, and long-term financial goals.
The updated version includes new tools such as financial planning worksheets, frequently asked questions about working with legal guardians or representative payees, and information on ABLE accounts — tax-advantaged savings accounts for people with disabilities.
Support for Families and Providers
A new section focuses on those who support individuals with disabilities, offering guidance on budgeting, saving, and financial goal-setting.
Officials said these additions are intended to improve coordination between workers and those assisting them in navigating complex financial and benefit systems.
“Financial independence is central to the American Dream and ensures that the talent and potential of all Americans can be fully realized,” said Julie Hocker, assistant secretary for disability employment policy.
Interagency Effort
The toolkit was developed through collaboration between multiple Labor Department offices, including the Office of Disability Employment Policy, the Employee Benefits Security Administration, and the Employment and Training Administration.
Daniel Aronowitz, assistant secretary for employee benefits security, said the update reflects the need for tailored financial guidance.
“We recognize that people with disabilities have unique economic decisions to make,” Aronowitz said.
Next Steps
The Department of Labor said the updated toolkit is available online and will continue to be refined to meet the needs of workers with disabilities and their support networks.
