WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Energy has selected 278 research projects under the Trump administration’s Genesis Mission, marking what the agency described as its largest-ever response to a funding opportunity and expanding federal investment in artificial intelligence for energy, science and national security research.
The selected projects will develop AI-enabled scientific workflows intended to accelerate research in areas including nuclear energy, critical mineral extraction, semiconductor design and commercial fusion.
According to the department, the awards include 87 projects led by Department of Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration laboratories, 168 led by universities, 19 led by companies and four led by nonprofit organizations.
The portfolio spans 342 participating institutions, including 16 DOE and NNSA national laboratories, 142 universities, 157 companies, 13 nonprofit organizations and 14 other institutions.
The largest award is a three-year, $60 million project focused on using artificial intelligence to accelerate the design, construction and operation of nuclear energy facilities while reducing operating costs.
The department stated that the research teams were chosen following a merit review process after receiving what it described as the largest number of submissions for a funding opportunity in its history. The announcement did not disclose the total funding allocated across all 278 projects.
“America has no shortage of bold ideas or talented scientists,” Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated. He added that the number of proposals reflected strong demand for AI-driven scientific research and could support future expansion of the initiative.
Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil stated that the selected teams will work to develop new research methods combining artificial intelligence with scientific computing.
Award recipients will receive access to the Genesis Mission Platform, including AI agent frameworks, advanced AI software, industry-supported models and high-performance computing resources available through DOE national laboratories and partner facilities.
The Genesis Mission is a White House initiative intended to apply artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific discovery and strengthen U.S. capabilities in energy, engineering and national security.
