Unsafe Food Temps, Dirty Equipment Trigger Chester County Warnings

Food Safety Inspections

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County Health Department inspectors cited five food establishments during May 6 inspections, including violations involving unsafe food temperatures, handwashing problems, sanitation failures and equipment issues.

The department said inspection reports are a “snapshot” of conditions observed at the time of inspection and may not reflect the overall, long-term sanitation or food safety status of an establishment.

Penn Street Pizza Inc. #4866 DBA Domino’s Pizza / Kennett Township, 629 Millers Hill Road, Kennett Square, was cited after hot water at the three-bay sink measured 100 degrees, below the 110-degree minimum required for dishwashing.

Inspectors ordered the facility to supply hot water above 110 degrees within 48 hours and warned that failure to comply would result in closure until the temperature issue is corrected. A reinspection was scheduled for Friday after 11 a.m.

Starbucks Coffee Co. #84390, 1084 East Lancaster Avenue, Downingtown, was cited after inspectors found an opened gallon of milk past its marked date. Staff discarded the milk during the inspection.

Inspectors also found multiple sandwiches in a warming refrigerator held at 45 to 47 degrees, above the required cold-holding temperature of 41 degrees or below. The food was discarded, and inspectors directed the facility not to store temperature-controlled food in the refrigerator until it is repaired and verified by Environmental Health Services.

Stone House Grille LLC, 1300 Hares Hill Road, Kimberton, was cited for several cold-holding violations, including food items held above 41 degrees and secondary food containers stored in an improper ice bath. Affected foods were voluntarily discarded.

Inspectors also cited Stone House Grille for a food handler drinking on the cook line, inadequate food safety knowledge by the person in charge, debris on a tabletop can opener blade, mold-like debris on an ice machine splash guard, wet wiping cloths not stored in sanitizer solution, handwashing failures and ready-to-eat food handled without gloves.

Additional violations at Stone House Grille included a nonworking handwashing sink in the warewashing room, cooked rice cooling in large stock pots on a prep table, cooling units not holding proper temperatures, improper date marking, missing sanitizer test strips and cleaning issues involving hoods, shelves, sinks, equipment carts, cooling units, floors and walls.

Sunny Ridge Restaurant Inc., 960 Ridge Road, Pottstown, was cited for food stored directly on the floor, expired milk, potatoes cooling at room temperature, uncovered food in a three-door cooler and adjacent freezer, and tuna salad, chicken salad and sliced cheese held between 44 and 50 degrees in a prep top unit.

Inspectors said the foods were discarded and directed the facility to have the unit serviced before using it to store temperature-controlled foods.

Sunny Ridge also was cited for using time instead of temperature to control certain foods without written procedures, damaged or noncommercial food storage containers, a tabletop fryer not under a vent hood, unclean food-contact surfaces, food debris in a dish machine and an unlabeled container of powdered laundry detergent.

The Barrel by Brothers Kershner, 122 Pennsylvania Avenue, Avondale, was cited for multiple handwashing and food storage violations, including an employee putting on gloves without first washing hands and another washing hands at a three-compartment sink instead of a designated handwashing sink.

Inspectors found raw chicken stored next to lettuce in a walk-in refrigerator, with the lettuce discarded on-site. Raw eggs also were stored above ready-to-eat foods, including cheese and rolls, and were relocated during the inspection.

The Barrel also was cited for sauces and mixers held without refrigeration, cheese sauce held at 110 degrees, meatballs and pork held between 80 and 100 degrees, food residue on a potato cutter, an unclean ice machine, vacuum-packaged fish thawing improperly, an unlabeled degreaser bottle, an opened can of cheese sauce stored in a refrigerator, and cutting equipment stored near a trash can.
