WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County Health Department inspectors cited food safety and sanitation violations at establishments in Downingtown and West Chester during inspections conducted June 18, while eight other facilities were found to be in compliance.
At Kung Fu Tea, 1088 E. Lancaster Ave., Unit E, Downingtown, inspectors documented several violations involving food storage, sanitation, plumbing, and maintenance.
According to the inspection report, soap was missing from the women’s restroom handwashing sink, food was stored in opened cans inside an undercounter cooler, and multiple ready-to-eat foods lacked required date markings.
Inspectors also noted the facility failed to display a valid Chester County Certified Food Manager certificate in a location visible to customers.
Additional violations included a leaking water filtration system, grease and dust accumulation in the kitchen hood system, and a handwashing sink in a back room that was obstructed by a folding chair. The person in charge corrected several issues during the inspection.
A follow-up inspection at Opa Taverna Greek Restaurant, 40-44 E. Gay St., West Chester, identified food temperature and cooling concerns.
Inspectors reported that one loaf of meat on a vertical shawarma unit was being held at room temperature after employees failed to turn on the heating unit. The restaurant’s person in charge stated the meat had been out for less than an hour. The unit was activated and the meat was rapidly reheated during the inspection.
The report also cited improper cooling procedures for cooked zucchini and onions, which were being cooled in large trays near a hot cooking area. Inspectors instructed staff to use approved rapid-cooling methods and monitor temperatures.
A third violation involved frozen fish thawing in standing water at room temperature, which is not an approved thawing method under food safety regulations.
The following facilities were inspected and found to be in compliance:
- Auntie Anne’s, 100 Commons Drive, Parkesburg
- Bachata Bakery LLC FMV @ AEFM, 208 Carter Drive, Unit 13B, West Chester
- Better Tomorrows Serving Regency Park Apts. (TERO), 699 Victoria Drive, Coatesville
