Ricoh Partners With Hyphen to Scale Restaurant Automation

Ricoh USA

EXTON, PA — Ricoh USA Inc. has partnered with food-service automation company Hyphen to expand the deployment and maintenance of robotic food-preparation systems across U.S. restaurant chains, targeting a growing market as operators seek to control labor costs and improve order fulfillment.

The agreement gives Hyphen access to Ricoh’s national service infrastructure through RICOH Service Advantage, which provides deployment, training and ongoing technical support for companies expanding their technology operations.

The arrangement addresses a significant obstacle to restaurant automation: the ability to install and maintain robotic equipment consistently across multiple locations without requiring technology developers to build extensive service networks of their own.

Hyphen’s technology includes the Automated Makeline, an under-counter system that assembles rice and salad bowls from orders placed through digital channels, including drive-thru, online and kiosk transactions.

The system allows restaurant employees to continue preparing and serving orders from the traditional countertop while automated equipment handles designated digital orders below.

Chipotle and Cava are both backers of Hyphen’s Automated Makeline technology.

The partnership is intended to help Hyphen move beyond individual installations toward broader deployments across restaurant chains.

“While we’ve seen tremendous interest in the potential of robotic technology to improve operations and provide a superior, more consistent customer experience, the ability to scale has hampered traction in this industry,” said Shawn Lange, Hyphen’s senior vice president of go-to-market.

Lange said Ricoh’s service capabilities would allow Hyphen to accelerate training, installation and implementation for restaurant operators considering chainwide adoption.

The agreement comes as restaurant companies face sustained pressure from operating expenses.

According to the National Restaurant Association, more than 90% of restaurant operators identify food, labor, insurance and inflation-related expenses as significant business challenges.

Automated food-preparation systems are being developed to help operators manage those pressures while maintaining consistent preparation processes and supporting digital ordering volumes.

The global restaurant robotics market, including automated food-preparation equipment, is projected to grow from approximately $2 billion in 2026 to $6 billion by 2033, with North America expected to account for a substantial share of that expansion, according to market estimates cited in the announcement.

For Ricoh, the agreement extends its service operations into restaurant robotics through an existing business model that supports the deployment and maintenance of third-party technology.

RICOH Service Advantage provides lifecycle management services intended to help technology companies expand their installed equipment base while maintaining operational support.

“Restaurant operators are turning to technology to improve the top line by delivering a differentiated and consistent brand experience, as well as the bottom line by driving down costs,” said Steve Sanders, vice president of Service Advantage at Ricoh North America.

The partnership combines Hyphen’s food-preparation equipment with Ricoh’s deployment and support capabilities, positioning the companies to serve restaurant operators seeking to introduce automation across multiple locations.

Its commercial significance will depend on whether restaurant chains can implement the technology at scale while achieving the operational efficiencies needed to justify investment in automated food preparation.
