Vishay Raises Surge Protection Capacity With New TVS Line

MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology Inc. (NYSE: VSH) introduced a series of transient voltage suppressors that increases peak pulse current while reducing clamping voltage, targeting protection requirements in automotive, industrial, server, and power-conversion systems.

The Vishay General Semiconductor XFD11KxxCA series consists of 15 bidirectional XClampR flat-clamping TVS devices offered in commercial-grade and AEC-Q101-qualified versions. The devices use a surface-mount DO-218AC package.

Vishay said the series provides peak pulse power dissipation comparable to an 11 kW conventional TVS at 10/1000 microseconds while maintaining a clamping ratio close to 1.0.

The devices have stand-off voltages ranging from 33 V to 85 V, supporting 12 V, 24 V and 48 V automotive powertrains. Maximum clamping voltages range from 40.6 V to 104 V, while breakdown voltages range from 36.7 V to 104 V.

Compared with conventional devices in DO-218-compatible packages at the same stand-off voltage, the new series provides lower clamping voltage and approximately 1.6 times higher peak pulse current, reaching as much as 207.1 A at 10/1000 microseconds, according to Vishay.

The lower clamping voltage allows designers to select lower-voltage downstream components, including MOSFETs and capacitors, while reducing voltage overshoot and design guard bands. Vishay said those characteristics can lower system costs.

The series operates across temperatures from minus 55 C to 175 C and provides 8/20-microsecond surge capability of as much as 2,140 A. Maximum leakage current at stand-off voltage is 10 microamps.

Vishay designed the devices to protect electronics against voltage transients caused by inductive-load switching and lightning.

Automotive applications include advanced driver-assistance systems, autonomous-driving control units, onboard chargers, DC/DC converters, traction inverters, battery-management systems, body-control modules, camera systems and other vehicle electronics.

The devices are also intended for energy-storage systems, industrial automation and motor systems, server and AI-server power applications, telecommunications equipment and radar power supplies.

The XFD11KxxCA series is RoHS-compliant and halogen-free, carries a moisture sensitivity level of 1 under J-STD-020 and has a maximum peak reflow temperature of 245 C.
