Vishay Intertechnology Unveils Automotive Optocoupler for EVs

Vishay Intertechnology

MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology Inc. (NYSE: VSH) has introduced an automotive-grade high-speed optocoupler designed to reduce circuit board space while increasing electrical isolation performance for electric vehicles and other industrial applications, as manufacturers continue to demand more compact and resilient electronic systems.

The company introduced the VOMHA43A, a 1 MBd optocoupler housed in a new 3.6 mm-wide SOP-5 package. Vishay stated the narrower package reduces printed circuit board space compared with conventional 4.4 mm designs while supporting applications requiring repetitive peak isolation voltages of up to 707 V.

The AEC-Q102-qualified device is intended for isolated data communication, signal switching, ground isolation and logic voltage level shifting in automotive, industrial, telecommunications, home automation and building control systems. In electric, hybrid-electric and low-speed electric vehicles, the component supports isolation for CAN, LIN, I²C and SPI communication interfaces, as well as intelligent power module driver circuits.

According to Vishay, the optocoupler provides a minimum guaranteed common-mode transient immunity of 40 kV/µs, which the company says is more than twice that of the nearest competing device. The component also offers a comparative tracking index of 400 and a maximum repetitive peak isolation voltage of 707 V, meeting the requirements of 400 V battery systems.

The device combines a gallium aluminum arsenide infrared-emitting diode with an integrated photodetector and high-speed transistor. Vishay indicated the photodetector is junction-isolated to reduce Miller capacitance effects, while a Faraday shield minimizes high common-mode transient voltages between the input and output.

The optocoupler operates over a temperature range of minus 40 to 125 degrees Celsius, is RoHS-compliant and halogen-free, and is pin-compatible with competing components, allowing manufacturers to replace existing parts without redesigning electrical or mechanical systems.
