AscellaHealth Releases Midyear Pipeline Outlook as Specialty Costs Rise

AscellaHealth

BERWYN, PA — AscellaHealth released its second-quarter 2026 Specialty & Rare Pipeline Digest, outlining how a growing pipeline of specialty drugs, cell and gene therapies, biosimilars, and treatments for metabolic and rare diseases is increasing financial and operational pressures for health plans, employers and other healthcare organizations responsible for managing pharmacy benefits.

The report examines recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration approvals, regulatory decisions, late-stage drug development and market trends that the company believes are reshaping specialty pharmacy strategy. AscellaHealth stated the publication is intended to help payers, pharmacy benefit organizations, employers, third-party administrators and health systems assess the clinical, financial and operational impact of emerging therapies.

According to the company, the report identifies several factors contributing to greater complexity in specialty pharmacy, including the continued growth of ultra-high-cost therapies, expanding treatment options for rare diseases, evolving competition in obesity and metabolic disease, and increasing biosimilar adoption.

“Specialty pharmacy has reached an inflection point where breakthrough therapies are arriving faster than traditional benefit strategies can adapt,” Andy Szczotka, chief pharmacy officer at AscellaHealth, stated. “Healthcare payers need a forward-looking view of the market to shape long-term specialty benefit strategy.”

The company indicated that new specialty drug approvals and expanded indications are increasing the need for formulary management while organizations balance access to new therapies with long-term financial sustainability. It also noted that growing biosimilar competition is creating new considerations for contracting, reimbursement and utilization strategies.

AscellaHealth reported that the second-quarter report is the first in the series to be accompanied by a blog offering additional analysis of specialty pharmacy trends. The resources are also available through AscellaOne, the company’s pharmacy benefits marketplace launched earlier this year.

Szczotka added that the report is intended to help benefit decision-makers evaluate how emerging therapies could affect financial exposure, competitive dynamics and long-term benefit strategy rather than simply tracking new products entering the market.
