WEST CHESTER, PA — AccessLex Institute’s law school admissions initiative has helped 117 participants enroll in law school over five years, according to a new report that also identifies application timing and preparation strategies associated with higher admission rates among applicants facing significant barriers to entry.

The West Chester-based nonprofit reported that its LexPreLaw program served 1,002 aspiring law students since launching in 2020, providing LSAT preparation, admissions counseling, financial assistance and individualized guidance.

Of those participants, 157 received at least one law school admission offer, 109 received at least one scholarship offer and 53 have graduated from law school.

The results reflect the program’s focus on applicants who face reduced admission prospects because of lower LSAT scores or limited familiarity with the law school application process.

According to AccessLex, 92% of participants came from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups, while 80% were from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

The five-year analysis also identified several application practices associated with greater likelihood of admission.

Participants who began LSAT preparation before Aug. 1 were 48% more likely to gain admission, while those who took the examination before Nov. 1 were 24% more likely to receive an offer.

Application timing showed a similar relationship. Participants who submitted applications before Dec. 1 were 13% more likely to gain admission than those applying between Dec. 1 and Feb. 1, and 52% more likely than applicants submitting materials after Feb. 1.

Applying to a broader range of institutions was also associated with stronger outcomes. Participants who applied to at least five law schools were more than twice as likely to receive an admission offer.

The findings identify relationships between preparation, application behavior and admissions outcomes rather than establishing that those practices independently caused higher acceptance rates.

LexPreLaw operates as part of LexScholars by AccessLex, an initiative established to expand access to legal education for applicants who may lack traditional admissions advantages.

“LexPreLaw was created to help expand access to resources, guidance, and support that increase one’s chances of getting into law school,” Aaron N. Taylor, executive director of the AccessLex Center for Legal Education Excellence, stated.

The report marks the program’s fifth anniversary and provides a measure of its admissions and educational outcomes since inception.

AccessLex’s findings also underscore the importance of early preparation and application planning for prospective law students, particularly those entering the admissions process with fewer financial and institutional resources.
