WEST CHESTER, PA — True stories, unexpected twists and a little divine intervention will take center stage as West Chester’s top storytellers compete for the town’s ultimate storytelling honor.
The Beans Story Slam will host its 2026 Grand Slam on Thursday, Nov. 12, bringing together the winning performers from its past season for a championship competition at the United Methodist Church of West Chester.
Unlike the organization’s regular monthly gatherings, where audience members can volunteer to share their stories, the Grand Slam features a curated lineup of previous winners competing for the title of West Chester’s Best Storyteller of 2026.
Five Minutes to Tell an Unforgettable Story
This year’s competition revolves around the theme “Divine Intervention,” inviting storytellers to recount personal experiences involving extraordinary luck, mysterious coincidences or unexpected turns of fate.
Each contestant will have five minutes to deliver a true story from memory, without notes, props or music. The stories must relate to the evening’s theme and be truthful as the storyteller remembers them.
The stripped-down format puts the emphasis on the storyteller’s voice and ability to connect with the audience.
At the end of the evening, one competitor will receive a special prize and the coveted title of Best Storyteller in West Chester for 2026.
Stories That Bring the Community Together
The Beans Story Slam has built its monthly gatherings around a simple idea: Everyone has a story worth telling.
Each event features a different theme, encouraging participants to share personal experiences that can be funny, moving, surprising or deeply relatable.
The Grand Slam celebrates the season’s standout storytellers while giving audiences another opportunity to experience the personal narratives that make the series distinctive.
The event also reflects a sentiment expressed by Mary Lou Kownacki, whose words appear in the event announcement:
“There isn’t anyone you couldn’t love once you heard their story.”
An Evening That Also Helps Fight Hunger
Beyond the storytelling competition, the Grand Slam will support an international hunger-relief effort.
Ticket purchases include light refreshments and a donation to Rise Against Hunger, benefiting the United Methodist Church of West Chester’s meal-packing event scheduled for January.
The gathering combines an evening of entertainment with an opportunity to help provide meals to people facing hunger around the world.
Organizers also emphasize that the Grand Slam will take place at the United Methodist Church of West Chester rather than the series’ usual location, Side Bar Restaurant.
