WEST CHESTER, PA — Lights, cameras, and a milestone celebration are set to take over Downtown West Chester as the 20th West Chester International Short Film Festival returns for a three-day showcase of global storytelling, local talent, and community connection.
Running April 24 through April 26, this year’s festival features a curated lineup selected from a record number of submissions spanning more than 45 countries. From Oscar-winning animations to locally produced comedies, the anniversary event brings together filmmakers and audiences for a weekend that blends creativity, culture, and conversation.
Organizers say the festival remains a labor of love, powered entirely by volunteers committed to bringing independent film to the community. Events will be anchored at the Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center, with additional screenings and experiences hosted throughout Downtown West Chester.
This year’s programming offers something for every audience.
Fans of late-night thrills can look forward to the return of the Horror Block, a popular showcase of suspenseful films from around the world, set for an intimate, high-energy experience at Mayday Coffee & Shop. History enthusiasts can explore Chester County’s past and future during a special collaboration with the Chester County History Center, featuring locally focused films followed by a panel discussion with historians and community voices.
Families are invited to ease into Sunday with Coffee & Cartoons at BierHaul TownHouse, where brunch meets a lineup of globally sourced short films suitable for most audiences. The weekend will close with the Best of the Fest Party, highlighting award winners and fan favorites alongside food, desserts, and a two-hour open bar.
Among the standout selections, The Girl Who Cried Pearls, a 2026 Oscar-winning animated short from Canada, offers a haunting fable about love and loss, while Retirement Plan, an Oscar-nominated Irish animation, reflects on the search for meaning beyond work. Local and regional filmmakers are also well represented, including Becoming The Man: A Prequel, filmed in Downtown West Chester, and Dare to Declare, a documentary connecting the Declaration of Independence to modern civic life.
Filmmakers say the festival continues to serve as both a creative hub and a meaningful gathering place.
“It is such an honor to return to the West Chester Film Festival with a nomination of Best Comedy,” said filmmaker Brian Pennington. “The festival is always a great chance to reconnect with one of the most exciting and creative groups of filmmakers from across the world.”
