WEST CHESTER, PA — Nearly 500 student artworks filled the Chester County Art Association during this year’s Chester County High School Art Exhibition and Congressional Art Competition reception, celebrating the creativity and achievement of young artists from across the region.
Held Wednesday, April 15, the event drew a strong turnout of students, families, educators, and art enthusiasts, creating a vibrant and inspiring atmosphere as attendees explored a wide range of pieces, including sculptures, oil paintings, colored pencil works, and photography.
The evening’s highlight was the awards ceremony, where student artists were recognized for outstanding work in both the county exhibition and the PA 6th District Congressional Art Competition. Josiah Fung of Wilmington Friends School earned first place in the congressional competition for his piece “Friends for Life,” which will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Lily Robins of Phoenixville Area High School placed second with “Boots,” and Andrew Grunza of West Chester East High School took third with “Coming Home,” with both works set to be displayed in Rep. Chrissy Houlahan’s local offices.
“This exhibition is a celebration of the incredible artistic talent across Chester County’s high schools,” said Kathy Gurnee, special events coordinator for the Chester County Intermediate Unit.
The event also provided meaningful moments for educators and students alike. Coatesville Area Intermediate High School art teacher Niya Zurcher, a former participant, described the experience as a full-circle moment, especially as one of her own students earned first place for a collage during her first exhibition.
Organizers credited the Chester County Intermediate Unit for coordinating the exhibition, along with the Chester County Art Association for hosting and judging the event. Support from CCRES Educational and Behavioral Health Services was also recognized for helping make the exhibition possible.
With another successful showcase of student talent complete, organizers say the annual exhibition will continue to provide young artists with opportunities to share their work, gain recognition, and inspire the next generation of creators.
