WEST CHESTER, PA — West Chester University has received the 2026 Higher Education Excellence and Distinction Award for the sixth time, recognizing the university’s work in academic excellence, campus belonging, and community-building.
The HEED Award is presented by Insight Into Academia magazine to U.S. colleges and universities based on their institutional practices and programs.
West Chester University was among 61 recipients selected for 2026 and will be featured with the other honorees in the magazine’s October issue.
Among the initiatives cited was the university’s Frederick Douglass Institute, which hosted its annual DeBaptiste Douglass Lecture in recognition of America250. The event featured a keynote titled “The Struggle for Democracy and Justice in America: What Would Frederick Douglass Do?”
The university was also recognized for its Parenting Pathways Program, which provides mini-grants, resources, and community events for students who are parents.
As part of the program’s annual Parenting Student Graduation Celebration, students’ children receive a special cord to present to their parents before the university’s formal commencement ceremonies.
“The HEED Award demonstrates engagement in a wide array of best practices, in addition to innovation and a collective commitment to excellence,” said Tracey Robinson, West Chester University vice president for the Division for Access, Compliance, and Engagement. “This award is all about what we do, not just what we say.”
Insight Into Academia co-publisher Lenore Pearlstein said recipients are selected using both a detailed scoring process and a holistic review of applications.
“Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where academic excellence and belonging are woven into the work being done every day across their campus,” Pearlstein said.
